You're Poisoning Yourself and You Don't Even Know It!
Part 3: Toxic Environment
When I was in High School, my parents made it very clear that my primary focus on was my studies. As a result, I spent a lot of time studying in my bedroom. Like some teenagers, maintaining cleanliness was not a top priority. So, dirty clothes, leftover plates, cups, and half-eaten snacks started to pile up since I was too “focused” on studying. I’m confident that the medley of smells from my bedroom would’ve inspired a different version of Nirvana’s famous song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
My usual after-school repertoire was to toss my backpack in my bedroom. One day, after doing so, a very odd sound echoed back. Upon opening my bedroom door, I was horrified to discover every single garbage bag from all over our house was piled upon my bed and desk. Also included were hefty bags of garden trimmings, and all the recyclables spread around the rest of my room. No one was home yet, and I didn’t know what in the heck was going on.
Confused and beyond upset, I frantically called up my father at his work and explained my unpleasant discovery. He calmly and sarcastically said, “Oh, was that your bedroom? Because when I walked by, it looked and smelled just like a dump. So, after you left for school, I collected the rest of the garbage and put it in the dump.” There was a long silence after that. I knew I had screwed up. He further explained that if I didn’t want to continue to live in a dump, it would be in my best interest to clean it up and keep it that way so that he would not get confused again.
My sister, whose bedroom was adjacent to mine, already wanted to kill me due to the odd aromas. Undoubtedly, the accumulating toxicity of my room would’ve done the job for her. So, just as one smelly teenager’s bedroom could disrupt the environment and ecosystem of a family home, it is evident that we are doing the same to our planet and ourselves. This isn’t done intentionally, but it is often done unknowingly and unwittingly by us and to us. The result is that it is making us and our planet sicker.
