Misperception: My Food is Organic, Non-GMO, or Brand Name, So It's Better!
I’ve always advocated for my patients to eat an organic, whole-food diet, and avoid processed and ultra-processed foods. Although organic foods can be more expensive, eating conventional fruits and vegetables is better than avoiding them altogether. However, the toxicity of our environment has increased over the years, affecting the overall quality and nutrition of our food. So the asparagus or carrot you eat today is less nutritious than 50 years ago.
The soil we grow our food in to keep up with today’s demand is so nutrient-depleted that it does not extract the same nutritional value as it did long ago. Plus, to make plants grow faster, last longer, and rot slower, they are sprayed with chemicals that have unknown long-term effects on our health. Even as recently as August 7, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has had to take emergency action to stop farmers from using a pesticide (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate, or DCPA or Dacthal) known for decades as a risk to human health.
